The Sunday Post AKA What’s on my (Mostly Virtual) Nightstand 7-4-21

Today is the actual Fourth of July, so Happy Independence Day to everyone in the U.S.

It’s also a three-day weekend this year (AND NEXT YEAR!), which means an extra long weekend of reading – or whatever floats your boat. Come to think of it, one could read while floating on that boat! I’m in the middle of four big epic fantasy books, and should manage to finish at least ONE this weekend. We’ll see.

Last week, I had a request to turn What’s on my (Mostly Virtual) Nightstand into a meme with a link up, so the link up is at the bottom. My books are mostly ebooks, hence the “Mostly Virtual” in the title. If yours are too, feel free to link up here as well as to Caffeinated Reviewer’s Sunday Post. The more we link, the more we books we can add to our towering TBR piles!

Last but not least – definitely not least as Freddie and George are our two biggest cats – here’s this week’s cat picture. Freddie likes to climb. George actually doesn’t, which is kind of a surprise as he certainly has the legs for it. But here we have Freddie, as usual posing as the Prince of Quite A Lot, looking down upon George, posing as his lonely, downtrodden minion.

For those in the U.S., happy Independence Day weekend! It’s even a three-day weekend this year as the actual holiday falls on Sunday so it’s “officially” celebrated on Monday. At the moment, I’m in the middle of reading four completely different epic fantasies, and I kind of need to finish one over the weekend. Murphy’s Law means that the one I most want to finish is the one I’m listening to rather than reading – and it’s a MUCH better listening experience so I’ll have to read something else to myself. That’s just the way the cookie crumbles.

Whatever you decide to do for the long weekend – if you have it – I hope it’s fun!

The Sunday Post AKA What’s on my (Mostly Virtual) Nightstand 6-27-21

It’s going to be a lazy Sunday here at Chez Reading Reality, because certain humans were up much too late last night playing Mass Effect Andromeda again. Here’s a picture of sleepy Hecate snoozing in the sun and a very sneaky George photobombing her close up. I’ve just realized that George looks an awful lot like the cover picture of the cat Eggs Benedict in the Alaskan Diner series, so he’s even appropriate for this coming week’s books!

The Sunday Post AKA What’s on my (Mostly Virtual) Nightstand 6-20-21

Today is Father’s Day. I still miss mine, even after 30 years. If yours is still around, and your relationship is halfway good, it’s a day for a visit or a phone call. If yours isn’t still around, or if your relationship isn’t, it’s a day for reflection – or however you deal with that loss whether it’s through death or otherwise.

Now back to our regularly scheduled discussions of books and cats. Speaking of which, here’s a picture of both. Folks often mention that my Stacking the Shelves posts are quite huge, or the stacks are VERY tall, or put it some other way that makes it clear that people wonder how it happens. The picture above illustrates how. This is one week of UPS deliveries and I have to believe that the UPS person HATES me. George T. Cat included for scale – and giggles.

Today is Juneteenth! And for the very first time, it’s a federal holiday. While it’s about time for the holiday, it is kind of amazing that it got signed into law this week and immediately went into effect. Next year, Juneteenth will be on the same Sunday as Father’s Day.

The Sunday Post AKA What’s on my (Mostly Virtual) Nightstand 6-13-21

A few weeks ago I posted a picture of Freddie as the “Prince of Quite A Lot” of paper products. His “throne” has been raised to new heights!

I have to say that this week’s schedule gets a bit iffy after the blog hop on Wednesday. There will be posts – there will always be posts! But I’ve found myself feeling different books than the books I thought I was going to feel for the last couple of weeks and it could happen again!

After reading All the Feels several months early, I couldn’t resist looking for more of Olivia Dade’s books – just in case I need another reading pick-me-up sometime soon.  Because of course I will. I don’t know about you, but HAVING to read something was always the kiss of death when I was in school. Sometimes I still feel that way – or sometimes I’m just not feeling the book I happen to have in hand!

On an entirely different note, my curiosity bump itches something terrible about the Laurell K. Hamilton book. I loved the first few books of the Anita Blake series before it got to the porn-with-little-plot point, and kept reading them long after I should have stopped. I can’t help but wonder if this new series is going to be more like those early books – or more like the later ones. We’ll see.

The Sunday Post AKA What’s on my (Mostly Virtual) Nightstand 6-6-21

It’s been “bounce-off” week this week and it looks like next. I’ve not been feeling quite the thing, so I’ve really been looking for books I can get stuck into right away. Which means I’ve thrown this week’s schedule into a blender fairly often in the last couple of days. I’m not too sure this version will stick either after the first couple of books – because I’ve already finished them! I also finished All the Feels by Olivia Dade because it’s what I desperately WANTED to read, even though it won’t be out until October and I can’t post the review for months. But it’s so good. If you loved Spoiler Alert you’ll love All the Feels, too.

But speaking of spoilers, I have to spoil this picture a bit. It’s titled “Anticipation“, after the song, but what Freddie thinks he’s anticipating here isn’t what he’s actually going to get. He’s hoping it’s food. Chewy’s boxes often contain food. And Freddie, out of all of our cats, is the one who lives to eat. He’s going to be so disappointed when we open these and he learns that it’s just kitty litter. Not that that’s not important for a cat who loves to eat! It’s just not nearly as interesting.

I’m not sure whether the appropriate catch phrase for this month is “June is busting out all over” or “Spring is sprung, Fall is fell, here comes summer and it’s hotter than…last year.”  Both feel like they are equally true, although it’s not so much that June is busting out all over as “It’s June, we’re vaccinated, and people are busting out all over.” Because it is, we are, and we definitely are. It still feels like a treat to just go out and do things and see people everywhere, knowing that whether or not they are vaccinated – although I certainly HOPE they all are – I definitely am. It’s starting to feel “real” that events are happening again.

But that doesn’t mean that I’m not still taking a book or my iPad or at least my iPhone with me wherever I go. There’s always time to READ!

The Sunday Post AKA What’s on my (Mostly Virtual) Nightstand 5-30-21

I miscalculated when I was putting together the calendar and scheduled a tour for tomorrow. Which is Memorial Day. A day I don’t usually post a review, and when I do it’s at least somewhat relevant to the day. But I messed up so there’s a review. It’s a good book, I didn’t mess that part up!

There are no current giveaways or recent winners, which always feels slightly weird, so it’s a good thing that there’s a very good, Berry Good blog hop starting on Tuesday, June 1. It’s hard to believe it’s June already, but the weather is certainly heading towards summer!

I may not be giving away books or gift cards this week, but I always have a cat picture to give you. Freddie will probably never be the king of all he surveys, but at this particular moment he was the prince of quite a lot of paper products!
