Stacking the Shelves (513)

I just finished Remarkably Bright Creatures, which leads me straight into The Mountain in the Sea as both stories are about octopi. Not that they way they deal with their respective octopi resembles each other in the slightest, but two books about octopi relatively close together does stretch the long arm of coincidence a bit. Or possibly eight arms of coincidence. We’ll see.

The other book in this batch I’m really curious about is Bitter Medicine. The cover is understated, but the story looks like fun!

Stacking the Shelves (512)

The stacks they are finally getting shorter. YAY!

This week I have a tie for which book I’m most excited about on the list. Horowitz’s The Twist of a Knife had held that position all by itself – until Friday. Because that’s when I learned that Scalzi had just let loose with another Dispatcher audio novella. I can’t wait to listen to Travel by Bullet, but I’m trying to finish the audiobook I’m in the middle of first and it isn’t nearly as exciting! Still, I’m halfway done and I’m afraid that if I don’t finish it now I won’t. We’ll just have to see how strongly the Dispatcher calls to me in the week ahead!

I picked up The Book Haters’ Book Club for the title but it really does look like fun!

The Sunday Post AKA What’s on my (Mostly Virtual) Nightstand 8-28-22

As far as books go, this week started terrifically and ended well, but middled in the slough of despond a bit. Looking back, I think the biggest issue with both Would You Rather and Small Town, Big Magic was that they were both billed as romcoms and neither of them were. I could even debate whether Small Town, Big Magic was a romance at all. But both books dealt with too many serious issues, and dealt with them seriously, to be romcoms. I think I might have liked both of them a bit more if I’d come in with more accurate expectations. YMMV.

But speaking of expectations, one of the expectations we keep hoping for here at Chez Reading Reality but not yet achieving is peace among the cat clowder. As you can see from the picture above, George and Luna are definitely getting there. It may look like he’s about to bite her throat but they were actually grooming each other – and they are playing together as I type this. Hecate, on the other hand, seems determined to remain in lonely – and very bitchy – solitude. The other day Hecate cornered Luna in my office and big Tuna came rushing to his sister’s rescue. Hecate has been in near total retreat ever since. We’re starting to wonder if there’s enough Feliway in the universe to calm this situation down.

Two books here feel like a blast from the past. It’s even the same past, as I’m pretty sure I was reading the early books in both series at around the same time. One is Sword-Bearer by Jennifer Roberson and the other is Into the West by Mercedes Lackey. I read both the first book in Roberson’s Tiger and Del series (Sword-Dancer) and the first book in Lackey’s Valdemar series (Arrows of the Queen) when they first came out back in the mid-1980s. My reading of both series fell prey to the “so many books, so little time conundrum” but it’s good to have them both back again.

BTW, the first book in the Founding of Valdemar subseries, Beyond, was excellent and a terrific way to get back into Valdemar if you’ve been gone from it a long time – as I had. Now I’m eager to read this next installment!

The Sunday Post AKA What’s on my (Mostly Virtual) Nightstand 8-21-22

I needed a bit of extra time to get this post together this weekend because I was having a difficult time deciding what I felt like reading this week – at least until I prepped the Stacking the Shelves post and decided that T. Kingfisher’s The Seventh Bride and Karen White’s The Shop on Royal Street were the books calling my name that I hadn’t quite been hearing loudly enough up to that point.

So here we are.

But speaking of things just being where they are, here’s a picture of, well, still not peace in our time, but at least a bit of a detente between George and Luna. George and Hecate are both still less than thrilled with poor Tuna’s presence in the house. Not because Tuna has done anything, just that he’s so large and such a big bumbler. He keeps charging up to George, kind of like a big, floppy dog, and George is all “Get away, GET AWAY!”

Luna, on the other hand, seems to be getting along with everyone!

Stacking the Shelves (510)

What a mixed bag this stack is! There’s one I’ve already read, The World We Make, for an LJ review, and it is excellent. Not quite as good as the first book, The City We Became, but still excellent. The most intriguing title award goes to The Fortunes of Jaded Women, and the book that tempts me the most – but is one of the furthest out, of course – is The Cliff’s Edge. And there are two calling my name right now, The Shop on Royal Street and The Seventh Bride.

So damn many books, so damn little time! Dammit!

The Sunday Post AKA What’s on my (Mostly Virtual) Nightstand 8-14-22

I think this is it for this week? I changed my mind (a LOT) about the end of the week – and may change it yet again before I get there. But this is what it looks like, at least so far!

Speaking of what things look like, this is a picture of Luna, zoombombing one of Galen’s meetings. I love the expression on her face as she looks at him adoringly while trying to figure out where the strange voices are all coming from!

This batch looks more interesting than it does pretty, but that happens some weeks. I’ve already listened to the Star Trek: Picard audio because I really needed to go to my happy place this week. I’m planning to read To Each This World for a Library Journal review. Silver Under Nightfall looks fascinating, so that may move up the towering TBR pile in the near future.

Tho’ I still need a bigger “Round Tuit”, don’t I?

First, Amazon had a sale. Second, I got tempted by someone’s recommendation into getting the Relic Runner series. You can see how that worked out in my review of the first book, The Courier, earlier this week. And I got tempted by a few things. More than a few. It’s not as if this week is different from any other week, after all!
