Snow Much Fun Giveaway Hop

Welcome to the Snow Much Fun Giveaway Hop, hosted by Mama the Fox!

Is snow much fun for you? It isn’t for me, so I’m grateful to live someplace where we don’t get much of it. I’m rather fond of saying that winter only deals a glancing blow around here. We occasionally get a dusting, but whenever they start predicting a snowpocalypse the whole city shuts down until it passes – or melts.

It’s raining here now. Actually, Spring has pretty much sprung around here. The summers, on that dreadful other hand, are rather beastly. But that’s why iced tea was invented.

Meanwhile, snow. If you haven’t seen the last snowfall of the season in your area by now, you will sometime this month. Even Anchorage generally slid into mud season by April Fools’ Day. And slid, and slipped, and slid some more. And squelched a bit. There are LOTS of things I miss about living there, but winter and breakup are not any of them.

How much snow is too much for you?

Romance is in the Air Giveaway Hop

Welcome to the Romance is in the Air Giveaway Hop, hosted by Bookhounds!

Tomorrow is Valentine’s Day, so people are thinking romance. Having it, losing it, keeping it and especially reading about it! Or at least especially so for this blog hop, which is all about romance books.

Speaking of reading about romance, I have a few (dozen) on my TBR pile right now. What about you? The two I’m most looking forward to in the coming months are Pride, Prejudice and Other Flavors by Sonali Dev and The Right Swipe by Alisha Rai. But I’m sure there will be plenty more as the year goes by.

But speaking of years going by, if you’re looking for something that’s already out, take a look at the SFR Galaxy Awards, just announced on January 31. The judges (full disclosure, including moi) have selected yet another terrific list of science fiction romance that would make a perfect Valentine’s Day read – or a perfect read any day of the year when you want to put a little rocket fuel in your romance read!

My book for tomorrow is a surefire winner, as has been everything by this particular author that I’ve read. And that’s mostly everything. Who are your “go-to” romance authors? Answer in the rafflecopter for your chance at either a $10 Amazon Gift Card or a book up to $10 in value from the Book Depository.

February Of Books Giveaway Hop

Welcome to the February Of Books Giveaway Hop, hosted by It Starts at Midnight and Flylef!

The question, as always, is what book or books are you most looking forward to this month?

Special case for the Midwest, what books are beside your nest during this winter’s deep freeze? I looked up the weather for both Chicago and Anchorage – because I’ve lived in both during the winter – and Anchorage is supposed to be more than 30° warmer than Chicago on Thursday. That’s just wrong. I’m happy to be in Atlanta where it’s a sunny 50° as I write this post.

Just because I’m not about to freeze my extremities off does not mean that there aren’t plenty of books I’m looking forward to this month. I’ve been reading lots of SF and fantasy recently, and the books I’m most looking forward to this month are in those genres.

Particularly The Ruin of Kings by Jenn Lyons, The Raven Tower by Ann Leckie, The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon, and of course, Mission: Her Defense by one of my fave authors, Anna Hackett.

What about you? What books are you most looking forward to this month? Answer in the rafflecopter for your choice of either a $10 Amazon Gift Card or a $10 Book from the Book Depository.

Hats Off Giveaway Hop

Welcome to the Hats Off Giveaway Hop, hosted by Mama the Fox!

It’s that time again. Time to settle back into so-called “normal” life after the hustle and bustle of the holidays. Or, for those who look at the holidays as a time to relax, time to get back on the treadmill, or back to the rat race, or whatever feels like “normal” to you.

When we lived in Alaska, the problem with January was that there wasn’t nearly enough daylight, it’s bloody damn cold, it’s been winter since early October and it’s going to BE winter until mid-April. Not that it’s any different in December, but in December I didn’t notice it so much because of the holidays. Even for someone who doesn’t celebrate Xmas, those lights are excellent for brightening and cheering the place – any place – up for a bit.

January was just gloomy. And cold. Did I mention cold?

So I’m happy to be in Atlanta, where winter generally deals a mere glancing blow to the area – and where we have sunshine most days even if it is just a tad chilly some of the time. But even 30 above zero is a huge improvement over 30 BELOW zero. I’ll take it.

But back to normal. Or whatever passes for normal in your neck of the woods. For me, normal life and January are usually marked by two things. The first is that the publishers come back to life after the holidays, and the new Spring and Summer books absolutely pour into NetGalley and Edelweiss.

The second is the American Library Association Midwinter Conference, which is usually held sometime in January, and often someplace that is just too damn cold in the winter. Last year was Denver. BRRRR! This year it’s in one of my old stomping grounds, Seattle. Where it will probably be a bit gray and gloomy, and rainy, but hopefully not blizzardy with snow. Next January will be Philly. BRRRR again. BRRRR I say. BRRRR!

What about you? What makes you feel like life is “back to normal” after the holidays? Answer in the rafflecopter for your choice of either a $10 Amazon Gift Card or a book, up to $10 US in value, from the Book Depository.

Jeepers! It’s January Giveaway Hop

Welcome to the 4th Annual Jeepers! It’s January Giveaway Hop, hosted by The Kids Did It and The Mommy Island

It may be January, but unlike last year, it’s in the balmy 60s here in Atlanta, at least until Wednesday, when it will dip into the less balmy but still not too bad 40s. Compared to last year, this is just fine. Peachy even, to make a bad Atlanta pun. (Everything here is either peaches or peachtrees – including, it seems like, ALL the street names.)

But this is just the kind of winter weather we moved here for. We do get four seasons, but winter generally deals just a glancing blow – and that’s the way I like it.

Just for funsies, I decided to look up today’s temperature in all the places I’ve lived. (I’m doing this on Monday, so the actual weather may differ slightly from predicted)

Cincinnati – 57°
Chicago – 42°
Anchorage – 11°
Tallahassee – 71°
Gainesville FL – 69°
Seattle – 42° (and RAINING all week)

The saying goes that “climate is what you expect, weather is what you get”. I like what we get here just fine.

What about you? Do you like the winter weather where you are, or do you dream of someplace warmer – or snowier? Answer in the rafflecopter for your chance at either a $10 Amazon Gift Card or a book (up to $10 in value) from the Book Depository.

3…2…1 Giveaway Hop

Welcome to the 3…2…1 Giveaway Hop, hosted by Mama the Fox!

And it’s the New Year! Welcome to 2019! OMG.

I remember when I was a kid, I’d figure out exactly how old I’d be when the century turned, and thought that it sounded so OLD. Now we’re 19 years past that, and I wouldn’t mind being that age now. Or again. Or both. C’est la vie. And better la vie than the alternatives.

But today is New Year’s Day. A time for resolutions…and renewal. The old year is done, and the new one has commenced. For me, this year is already off to a better start than last year, as I spent part of January 1, 2018 in the hospital. So things are already looking up!

What about you? Do you think this year is going to be better than last year, not as good as last year, or about the same? Answer in the rafflecopter for your chance at either a $10 Amazon Gift Card or $10 in books from the Book Depository.

After all, it’s never too early to give yourself a treat to start the New Year right!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Midwinter’s Eve Giveaway Hop

Welcome to the 2018 Midwinter’s Eve Giveaway Hop, hosted by Bookhounds!

It’s beginning to look a lot like the holiday season – whichever holiday you happen to celebrate around the winter solstice. We kind of celebrate “December” as an excuse to give each other presents!

As the year winds its way down, the weather also takes a turn for the cold and damp. Just how cold and damp, and exactly what form that “damp” takes, varies a lot depending on where you are. In Atlanta we’ve got cold rain, at least at the moment. Which makes winter the perfect time to curl up with some hot tea or cocoa, warm blanket, a cuddly cat – or two or three! – and a good book.

To help you in your quest for that cozy scene, I’m giving away the winner’s choice of a $10 Amazon Gift Card or a $10 Book from the Book Depository.

Winter is Coming Giveaway Hop

Welcome to the Winter is Coming Giveaway Hop,  hosted by The Kids Did It and The Mommy Island.

Winter is coming. Here in Atlanta, that may only be theoretical (it’s 60 here today) but it is coming. It may have already come where you are. In fact, it may have already come with a vengeance where you are!

As I’ve mentioned before, we have moved around a lot. We also moved over the summer. Last winter, the entire second floor of the house was freezing all winter. We’re still finding the hot spots and cold spots in this house, but we’ve already discovered we’re a location for one of Murphy’s Laws. The coldest room in the house is the master bathroom. It has two outside walls and it’s bloody freezing. Unfortunately that is one room where one is guaranteed to be spending at least some time partially unclothed. Talk about freezing your buns off!

The warmest room in the house is the downstairs  half bath, which, as you might imagine, only solves part of the problem with the above.

As both of us have a tendency to use the “throne room” as an otherwise cozy place to read, this is a bit of a problem – but I’m sure we’re motivated to figure it out.

But speaking of reading, winter is a terrific time to curl up with a good book, a cup of your hot beverage of choice, and a cuddly cat, dog, or other warm furry creature. To facilitate your resources for doing just that this winter, I am giving away the winner’s choice of either a $10 Amazon Gift Card or a book (or books if you can manage it) up to $10 in value from the Book Depository. Just answer the question in the rafflecopter for your chance at the prize!

December Of Books Giveaway Hop

Welcome to the December Of Books Giveaway Hop, hosted by It Starts at Midnight and Flylef!

The question, this month and every month, is what book or books are you most looking forward to this month?

As a special case for December, the question may possibly be what book or books are you most hoping to find among your holiday presents?

Because of the holidays, the period between Thanksgiving and New Years Day is a bit of a fallow period for publishing. Not many new books come out this month, particularly in comparison to the big spring and fall publishing seasons. Which doesn’t mean there aren’t a few really good books on the reading horizon.

And that’s an excellent thing, because the winter months are always a great time to curl up with a cup of tea or cocoa, a good book, and a sleepy cat.

There are a few books I’m really looking forward to this month. There are always a few books I’m looking forward to every month.

But this month in particular, there’s For the Sake of the Game, edited by Laurie R. King and Leslie S. Klinger. This is the latest entry in their annual collection of new stories inspired by the Sherlock Holmes canon, and it always contains one or more marvelous stories. I’m sure that this year will be no exception.

There are also two historical romances that look like a lot of fun. One is Not the Duke’s Darling by Elizabeth Hoyt. This is the first book in her new Greycourt series. It’s always good to get in at the beginning, because her series are always excellent. Eva Leigh’s London Underground series has certainly been terrific, so I’m also looking forward to the upcoming book in that series, Dare to Love a Duke.

And last but certainly not least, comes The Gown by Jennifer Robson, all about the fascinating women who made Queen Elizabeth II’s wedding gown. This book should be very, very grand indeed – just like the gown itself.

What about you? What book or books are you most looking forward to this month? Answer the question in the rafflecopter for a chance at your choice of a $10 Amazon Gift Card or a $10 Book from the Book Depository!

Black Friday Book Bonanza Giveaway Hop

Welcome to the Black Friday Book Bonanza Giveaway Hop, hosted by yours truly, Reading Reality, and the Caffeinated Reviewer!

On the one hand, Black Friday isn’t quite what it used to be. It used to be THE semi-official start to the holiday shopping season – not that some frighteningly organized people didn’t get their shopping done well ahead of the season. With online shopping so convenient ALL THE TIME, one can hope that the madding crowds are a bit reduced. Certainly there are options that allow anyone so inclined (like moi) to avoid the proverbial Christmas rush altogether.

On that other hand, Black Friday got it’s name because that was the day when most retail stores began making a profit for the year, flipping their ledgers from red ink to black. I wonder if that part of the name still holds true?

One year we were in Vancouver, BC for Thanksgiving and the weekend after. It was very, very strange to see all the Black Friday sale signs in a place that did not have a Thanksgiving Thursday, as Canadians sensibly have their Thanksgiving holiday in October!

But here’s your chance to do a little shopping for yourself this Black Friday. Just answer the question in the rafflecopter for your chance at either a $10 Amazon Gift Card or a $10 Book from the Book Depository to treat yourself or someone else.
