Old School Giveaway Hop

Welcome to the Old School Giveaway Hop, hosted by Mama the Fox!

The term “Old School” is actually pretty old school itself. It was first used in 1749 and meant exactly what it means today, that someone or something is sticking to “traditional policies and practices” instead of whatever would have been “state-of-the-art” back in 1749.

But the older generation has ALWAYS complained about the younger generation. And I do mean always. There are quotes going back to Aristotle in the 4th century B.C.E. that prove that the older generation has ALWAYS thought the younger generation was on the road to perdition. Or Hades. Or wherever other than traditional, “old school”, productive adulthood.

“The more things change, the more they remain the same” – a quote that only goes back to 1849. Not nearly so old school, but still very apropos.

What’s the most “Old School” thing that you are hanging on to? For me it’s Classic Rock, which I listened to – on the radio OMG – when it was just Rock. What about you?

Answer in the rafflecopter for a chance at the usual prize around here, the winner’s choice of a $10 Amazon Gift Card or $10 in books.

Back to School Giveaway Hop

Welcome to the Back to School Giveaway Hop, hosted by Review Wire Media and Chatty Patty’s Place!

It is that time again – even if it feels WAY TOO EARLY for it. The local schools here had their first days of in person classes yesterday and today – although there are “Digital Learning Days” scheduled throughout the year. The more things change, the more things remain the same – no matter which direction you are counting as “change” or “same”.

But the start of the school year also highlights that there is a teacher shortage. The combined Atlanta are school districts (Atlanta, Fulton Co., Gwinnett Co., and DeKalb Co.) had over 1,000 teacher openings just a couple of weeks ago. That might have gotten a bit better since then, but not that much. A lot of school districts have come up with various “band-aid” type strategies to make sure that there are at least enough adults to supervise all the classrooms. We’ll all see what solutions districts come up with – and whether or not they work! – in the months ahead.

Nevertheless, for a lot of parents, this is the week where they mark that their kids are another year bigger and older and possibly more mature. The pictures my friends and colleagues are posting on FB to compare last year’s first day of school to this year’s certainly point out how quickly time flies!

So what do  you think of when you hear the words, “Back to School”?

Apple A Day Giveaway Hop

Welcome to the Apple a Giveaway Hop, hosted by Mama the Fox!

The last time I participated in this hop, back in 2020, I wondered whether the “apple a day” in the hop’s name referred to the old saying about “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” or if it was all about giving an apple to the teacher. Although teachers should be much better paid than just in apples, this year I’m pretty sure that it’s about that apple for the teacher, because the local schools are starting up this week.

Which still feels WAY too early. But then, I went to school in the Dark Ages. The buildings were old – my mother attended the same high school I did in mostly the same buildings – and they were, for the most part, NOT air conditioned. Summers in Cincinnati are fairly beastly, so students would have been dropping like flies if we’d been stuck inside those buildings in August. Now I’m sure they are all properly A/C’d, but I’m really happy that I don’t have to see the power bills for my old high school in the summer. It must be an expensive monster to cool – and yes, that old building is still in use.

No matter whether you are giving them to someone or keeping them all to yourself, apples are a marvelously tasty treat, whether you’re putting them in a pie or a cobbler, or just crunching down. (They’re great slathered with peanut butter!). But what’s your favorite kind of apple? When they’re available, I love Honeycrisps and Jonagolds. What about you?

Summer 2022 Seasons of Books Giveaway Hop

Welcome to the Summer 2022 Seasons of Books Giveaway Hop, hosted by It Starts At Midnight, Mocha Girls Read and Shooting Stars Mag!

Once upon a time, this was the Month of Books Giveaway Hop, now it’s the Seasons of Books Giveaway Hop, with the hops starting on the days the seasons change. Today is the first official day of Summer no matter how hot it might already be where you are. I’m in Atlanta and I’m not sure whether Hades is this hot or not. Comparisons could certainly be drawn- not that I ever want definitive data on the question!

But the question this season is the same question it’s always been for one of these particular hops. What book or books are you most looking forward to this season?

I’m never looking forward to just one thing when it comes to books. Here are a few that are at the top of my list for this summer of 2022:

Killers of a Certain Age by Deanna Raybourn
A Prayer for the Crown-Shy by Becky Chambers
Remember Love by Mary Balogh
The Unkept Woman by Allison Montclair
What Moves the Dead by T. Kingfisher

What about you? What books are you most looking forward to this summer? Answer in the rafflecopter for you choice of either a $10 Amazon Gift Card or $10 in books so you can get one or two of the books on your list!

Christmas in July Giveaway Hop

Welcome to the Christmas in July Giveaway Hop this week, this time hosted by Review Wire Media and Chatty Patty’s Place!

According to Wikipedia, “In the Northern Hemisphere, a Christmas in July celebration is deliberately ironic.” I can certainly see that, especially since Christmas in July is also literally a Hallmark holiday as the channel runs blocks of their winter Christmas programming in July to coincide with the release of coming holiday’s Keepsake Ornaments. Yes, it IS a racket if you think about it even a little.

Not that the ornaments aren’t adorable. I know that if I had a tree I’d have a huge collection of the Star Trek themed ornaments by now.

What do you think of the idea of “Christmas in July”? Answer for your chance at a little bit of hot holiday cheer, the winner’s choice of a $10 Amazon Gift Card or $10 in books.

Dad-O-Mite Giveaway Hop

Welcome to the Dad-O-Mite Giveaway Hop, hosted by Mama the Fox!

Father’s Day is this coming Sunday, June 19th, in the U.S. and a whole host of other countries. This particular bloghop celebrates dads of all kinds everywhere, whether bio-dads, adoptive dads, foster dads, dads of choice, pet dads and every kind of dad, granddad and father figure out there who is loved by their children, whether or not those children are little, or big, or have four feet or fur or feathers or scales, or any combination of the above.

We all need someone to fill that role in our lives. We’re not all lucky enough to get such a person. If you have one, and yours is still around, give them an extra hug for those who never did or no longer do.

Moms Rock Giveaway Hop

Welcome to the Moms Rock Giveaway Hop, hosted by Mama the Fox!

I’m trying to imagine my mom anywhere near that guitar in the hop graphic and my mind just boggled. Not that my mom wasn’t plenty badass in her own way, but that was definitely not the way.

OTOH, some of my friends are moms now, and I can definitely see several of them possibly rocking that guitar.

But even moms that don’t rock certainly rule!

For those of you out there who are moms, what’s your best mom thing? Or, if you’re like me and didn’t go that route or haven’t yet, what’s the thing you remember your mom doing best?

May Flowers Giveaway Hop

Welcome to the May Flowers Giveaway Hop this week, this time hosted by Review Wire Media and Chatty Patty’s Place!

If April Showers bring May Flowers, then what do Mayflowers bring? The correct answer is “pilgrims” but the wrong answers I got a couple of months ago were a lot funnier.

My favorite May flowers are peonies, even though they aren’t all that prevalent here in the Atlanta area. We don’t always get a cold enough winter for long enough for them to do well. But back in Chicago, they bloom in May and are always big and gorgeous and smell wonderful.

What about you? What are your favorite “may flowers”, or what flowers mean May or Spring to you? Answer in the rafflecopter for a chance at either a $10 Amazon Gift Card or $10 in books.

Life’s A Beach Giveaway Hop

Welcome to the Life’s a Beach Giveaway Hop, hosted by  The Mommy Island & The Kids Did It!

The little gnome up there looks like he’s all kitted out for a beachy adventure! I do wonder how he’s going to keep his hat on – must be magic involved!

Beaches can be magical places even if one sometimes gets sand in places where sand seriously does not belong. Not that there’s a beach anywhere near here.

I’m not a beach-type person, I’ve always preferred to curl up with a good book in the shade. But to each their own, and some folks, like that little gnome up there, clearly LOVE the beach.

What about you? Tell us your favorite beach activities in the rafflecopter for your choice of a $10 Amazon Gift Card or up to $10 in Books. No sand anywhere. Promise!
