Stacking the Shelves (17)

This was one of those weeks when I tried to be good. Only 12 books.

Three comments. I’ve already reviewed Delusion in Death, the new J.D. Robb. Got it Tuesday, finished it Wednesday. It was terrific to see how everyone at the NYPSD is getting on, but this wasn’t one of the “great” cases in the series. I still ate it up like candy. <sigh> Now I’ll have to wait until February, 2013, when Calculated in Death comes out for my next Eve and Roarke fix.

Beyond Shame says it’s by Kit Rocha, but it’s really by Moira Rogers. I adore their Bloodhounds series, so when I saw that this was them, I grabbed it from NetGalley. The authors are labeling it as “dystopian erotic romance”. Obviously not intended for the faint of heart, but based on their previous work, I’m definitely interested.

One of the fun things about video games is hearing actors where I have no idea what they look like. Then I see someone and “wait, I’ve heard that voice before!” I finally started watching Buffy (I know, what took me so long?) and realized that Ripper’s old pal Ethan Rayne, well, I’d heard that voice before. Frankly, I’d listen to Robin Sachs read the phone book. But hearing him read John Gardner’s The Return of Moriarty is definitely perfect casting. He’s reading the Godfather of London criminals, Sherlock Holmes’ nemesis. Cool and calculating. Marvelously chilling. Oh, the book is pretty good, too. (Ironically, the video game character I first heard him voice is a good guy).

What have you added to your stacks this week? A little? A lot? Anything special?

Interview with Author Lia Davis + Giveaway

I’m very pleased to welcome Lia Davis to Reading Reality today. She’s here to talk about her decadently delicious story from the 1Night Stand series Ravished Before Sunrise (see review for deliciousness)

Now let’s hear from Lia!

Marlene: Lia, can you please tell us a bit about yourself? What do you do when you’re not writing?

Lia: Hi! I’m a newbie author. I have two published ebooks and more on their way. 🙂 I’m a wife to a wonderful, supportive, and loving man. And a mother of two young adults and two furry felines. I have a BSA in Accounting and currently work full time in the Finance/Account department for a vendor management software company. When I’m not working the day job and writing, I spend time with family and read.

Marlene: All of your books are paranormal romance in one way or another. What is it that first attracted you to write love stories for the “things that go bump in the night”?

Lia: I love the creative freedom I have with writing paranormal. I can create worlds that are magical with creatures that excite the imagination. I love the danger, suspense, and mystery that come with the supernatural.

Marlene: Ravished Before Sunrise is part of the 1Night Stand series. How easy or difficult was it to squeeze a whole love story into just one night?

Lia: My average word count seems to be around 40K to 65K at the moment. So it was a challenge to write a shorter story at first. What helped me was that I believe in love at first sight. I have known couples that fell in love in the first meeting and are still together after many years of marriage. I also believe that there is someone for everyone and they meant to be together. And nothing happens by accident.

Marlene: Would you like to give readers a little taste of Ravished Before Sunrise? What can they expect?

Lia: Ravished is a quick and sexy adventure that starts with Emalee wanting a break from her life in hiding from the paranormal world. Her unusual abilities make the supernatural communities leery of her, so she lives in a witch’s coven with her BFF. For her 1Night Stand she chooses a romantic role-playing adventure to hunt a vampire and to be ravished by him.

The vampire, Darian, is a widower who has grown tired of his long-lived life. His loving daughter signs him up for the date.

Marlene: Do you plan everything or just let the story flow? Do your characters ever want to take over the story?

Lia: I start off planning the setting, character profiles, then outline the plot points. Once that is done I sit and let the story flow.

Marlene: Who first introduced you to the love of reading?

Lia: My mom. She loves to read romance. So naturally I picked it up and love it as much as she does.

Marlene: Who influenced your decision to become a writer?

Lia: Not sure if a specific person influenced me. I’ve always loved creative writing and making up stories. I’m just not sure why it took me so long to start writing to be published.

Marlene: What book do you recommend everyone should read and why?

Lia: There are so many great books out there. I’m always discovering a new series I fall in love with. If you are a history of science fan check out A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness. It’s awesome and the first book in her All Souls trilogy. The writing really draws you in. An all around great read.

Marlene: Now can you tell us 3 reasons why people should read your books?

Lia: Suspense and mystery intertwined with paranormal, believable love stories, and lovable characters.

Marlene: What’s next on your schedule? Do you have any upcoming projects you’d like to share?

Lia: I just finished Death’s Storm, the second in my Divinities series, and sent it to my editor. The target release date is November 2012. I am also working on a new series called Ashwood Falls about two shifter packs living together in one community. The first book, Winter Eve, is due to release in December 2012.

I also plan to write more 1NS stories.

Marlene: Morning person or night owl?

Lia: Night owl. It takes me too long to get going in the morning. 🙂

Lia, I’m with you! Instant human, just add caffeine. And Deborah Harkness’ A Discovery of Witches was amazing.

Thanks so much for being here today. I love the giveaway. Everyone needs a little more caffeine in their life!

Born with the unusual ability to see what truly lies in the shadows, Emalee Black is stuck between two worlds, the paranormal and the human. Neither one accepts or understands her and she’s forced to live a quiet, boring life in hiding. When her best friend mentions 1Night Stand dating service, Ema chooses a role-playing adventure straight out of her romantic fantasies. She’s to hunt her very own vampire and have her wicked way him.

Vampire Darian Wyman is surprised when his daughter signs him up for a one-night stand with an exclusive matchmaking agency. At first he’s appalled by the idea, but as he reads the details of the date, he becomes intrigued. For one night he will get away from the life he has long grown tired of to be hunted and captured by a would-be huntress. But he has plans of his own for his little vixen.

However, when Darian discovers the truth about Ema’s inhuman abilities, the date could end before it gets started.

I’ve confessed this before, the 1Night Stand series is kind of a guilty pleasure for me. They’re short, and when they’re done well (and this one is done quite well) they manage to pack a naughty but nice little happily ever after into a tidy package. Whoever came up with this idea was a genius.

Emalee wants to be the hunter, just for one night. She wants to live out the fantasy in her paranormal romances, and hunt a vampire. She thinks it’s going to be make-believe, except that Ema has a secret. She knows there really are vampires. She can sense them. And shifters. And demons. Oh yeah, and her BFF is a witch.

Darian doesn’t want this little one night stand at all. But there is one woman on earth that he can’t say “no” to. His daughter. She bought it for him as a present. He’s been moping around a bit too long since his wife died. When you’re a vampire, a real one, being a widower can last pretty close to forever.

The one night stand is supposed to be just that, one night. But it can be more. Especially when both parties find exactly what they were looking for. Even though neither of them knew they were looking at all.

Escape Rating B+: Just plain fun. Absolutely marvelous decadent and deliciously sexy fun. Darian and Ema find so much more than they are looking for. Ema finds stuff she didn’t even know was available to be found, like the secret to her powers. She doesn’t even know what she is, and Darian opens up an entire universe to her. In return, she brings him back to life. Almost literally, she gives him a second chance at feeling alive. But I liked that it didn’t resolve immediately. The epilogue is 6 months later, so it’s insta-lust and insta-recognition, but not insta-love.

Good story for such a short package. I wish there were more.

The Sunday Post AKA What’s On My (Mostly Virtual) Nightstand? 9-9-12

In theory, it’s Fall. I say theory, because in Atlanta, it’s still way up into the 80s. On that chilly other hand, my friends in Alaska tell me that the first overnight frosts of the season have been reported, right on time.

Loved the summers, hated the winters. Atlanta and Florida are the other way around. Clearly I need to find a happy medium.

Speaking of happy mediums, let’s recap last week’s reviews:

A- Review: Garment of Shadows (Mary Russell/Sherlock Holmes #12) by Laurie R. King
A- Review: Wicked As They Come (Blud #1) by Delilah S. Dawson
B+ Review: Senator, Mine (All Mine #1) by Kerry Adrienne
B- Review: Druid, Mine (All Mine #2) by Kerry Adrienne
B Review: Trust Your Eyes by Linwood Barclay
C+ Review: Blind Traveler Down a Dark River by Robert P. Bennett

But that was last week and this is, well, this week. The Labor Day holiday is over. No more long weekends until Thanksgiving, at least for those of us in the States.

But there’s still a lot to look forward to. So many books, so little time. Isn’t that on a t-shirt somewhere?

After Monday’s Ebook Review Central (this week the feature is Dreamspinner’s July titles) I have a couple of tours on tap.

Wednesday’s guest will be Lia Davis, because she’s on tour to promote her latest book, Ravished Before Sunrise. I will confess that the 1Night Stand series is kind of a secret vice, (not so secret now) so it’s great whenever one of their authors does a tour. They’re always fun reads, and Ravished Before Sunrise was no exception.

Thursday is a real treat. I love science fiction romance, and Heather Long has written a fantastic start to a new science fiction romance series. Yesterday’s Heroes mixes science fiction with superheroes and even time-travel for something really, really cool. So I’m very excited that she’s my guest for an interview and I had a chance to review Yesterday’s Heroes. I hope this first book in her Boomers series is the start of something big.

And looking ahead to next week, I’ll have one of the most interesting combinations I’ve seen in a while. Vampires and cowboys. Together. Specifically, Blood and Whiskey by Clark Hays and Kathleen McFall, the second book in their Cowboy and Vampire series. Clark and Kathleen are on tour, and they answered a bunch of my interview questions. I’ve got both books to look forward to for next week.

But first, this week, Shannon Stacey’s All He Ever Needed. Yes, that’s right. The fourth book in her Kowalski Family series is out on Monday and I’ve got a review copy (I have to review it for Library Journal). Expect a review on Reading Reality on Tuesday!

What are you up to this week? How’s your fall shaping up?

Stacking the Shelves (16) Dragon*Con Edition

This would be Stacking the Shelves, the Dragon*Con edition.  I say it’s the Dragon*Con edition for a couple of reasons.

The first is simply because I was at Dragon*Con over Labor Day weekend, and didn’t do a Stacking the Shelves post.  Romance at Random started their Labor Day Blog Hop, and Reading Reality was a participant. There’s still plenty of time to enter, so hop on over to the post and take a look at the giveaway.

About Dragon*Con. Downtown Atlanta looked like it had been invaded by aliens. I’ve been to big cons (Chicago holds three a year) but nothing like this. 50,000+ fen is a lot of fen. (For those unfamiliar, fen is the collective noun for science fiction fans)

While I did go to a couple of media tie-in events (any Mythbusters fans in here?) there were a bunch of authors I wanted to see. Mercedes Lackey and Katherine Kurtz in particular. I’ve been reading both their signature series since Arrows of the Queen and Deryni Rising, respectively. It was awesome to see them in person.

And great to meet authors whose books I have reviewed, like James R. Tuck. He was terrific, and I think even remembered my review. I’m pretty I’m going to finally review Blood and Silver this week. Damn it was good.

Speaking of his reading, he had all his friends who were authors also read from their books, so I picked up Delilah S. Dawson’s Wicked as they Come from her at that panel. And started it immediately, finished it and reviewed it this week. Decadently delicious.

So what delicious books have you added to your stacks this week?

Interview with Author Kerry Adrienne on Time Travel and One Night Stands

I’d like to welcome Kerry Adrienne to Reading Reality. This very busy lady is the author of the utterly delicious All Mine time-travel mini-series nestled inside Decadent Publishing’s, let’s just say it, totally decadent, One Night Stand erotic romance series. I had the pleasure of reading the first two books in Ms. Adrienne’s series,  Senator, Mine and Druid, Mine, and they were short and tasty treats (See my reviews of Senator and Druid to get a taste of just how delish!) . I’m definitely looking forward to Pharoah, Mine, due out in October.)

Until we can read about that Pharoah, let’s hear from Kerry about her take on time-travel romance…

Marlene: Hello, Kerry! Can you please tell us a bit about yourself? What’s your life all about when you’re not writing?

Kerry: Hi! Well, I work a lot! I am an Associate Editor at Entangled Publishing, and Managing Editor of the Covet line. I teach classes at a local college. Hmm. I sew (I’m a costumer), paint, play guitar… I love my five cats and would have more if hubby wouldn’t blow a gasket. 🙂 My main job, though, is mom to three daughters.

Marlene: Your All Mine series are all time-travel romances. What is it about time-travel romance that attracted you to the genre?

Kerry: I love history—I love researching and then pondering what life would be like to live in another time. I’m just fascinated by what the “everyman’s” life was like in different time periods.

Marlene: Senator, Mine and Druid, Mine are both part of the 1Night Stand series. How easy or difficult was it to squeeze each whole love story into just one night?

Kerry: Not easy at all. *Laugh*.  I could have written a lot more, but the point of the series is a quick read.

Marlene: What inspired you to choose the particular time periods that you did for your Senator, Druid and forthcoming Pharoah? And what was the research like for each period?

Kerry: Well, I minored in Classical Studies, so it’s a natural choice to pick those times. When researching, I would often lose myself for hours—completely forgetting I was actually going to write about the time period.

Marlene: Describe a typical day of writing? Are you a planner or pantser?

Kerry: Right now, there really isn’t a typical day—but I am working on a schedule. My youngest just went off to Kindergarten this year, so I have more time in the day to work. Sometimes I don’t write as much as I would like because my job keeps me busy. I am definitely trying to figure out a balance—and for me, that means a pretty rigid schedule.

Marlene: Who first introduced you to the love of reading?

Kerry: My aunt. She pointed me to her collection of Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys—and I dug right in.

Marlene: Who influenced your decision to become a writer?

Kerry: Wow, that is tough. Lots of people. I don’t even know where to begin.

Marlene: What book do you recommend everyone should read and why?

Kerry: *one* book? Ouch. Well, I think A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is pretty inspiring. 🙂

Marlene: Will there be more books in this series? (I’m really looking forward to Pharaoh, Mine) What upcoming projects do you have on your schedule that you’d like to share?

Kerry: I hope to write another, yes. As time allows. Right now, I have six other projects on my plate—and not enough hours in the day.

Marlene: Coffee or Tea?

Kerry: Tea—usually. But I love coffee, too.

A tea-drinking, history major who is staff to five cats. Kerry, you sound like my kind of writer! No wonder I enjoyed Druid, Mine and Senator, Mine…Pharoah, Mine should be a treat.

Thanks so much, Kerry for answering all my questions!

Review: Druid, Mine by Kerry Adrienne

Anya’s wish for a normal date—away from the old man she is caretaker for—comes true in unexpected ways when she finds herself whisked to an ancient Irish stone circle on solstice eve.

Carrick’s decision to follow the path to become an Ovate druid has not come lightly, and he plans to spend the solstice eve in meditation unless fairies or evil spirits disrupt the circle. When a feisty girl walks right up to the fire, more than sparks fly.

They each seek healing and a connection, but the darkness of summer is short, and once the solstice sun breaks through the circle at dawn, the magic of the night will be over. Even Madame Eve can’t stop the day from rising.

The story of Druid, Mine sounds a lot like the one from the first book in Kerry Adrienne’s All Mine series. And it’s almost as much fun the second time around. But not quite.

Anya seeks out Madame Eve’s services because she just wants a normal date…and she doesn’t have any way of getting one when all of her time is taken up being caretaker to an old man. He’s not family, it’s a job. But she’s traded security for any chance at her own life. Why, we don’t know.

Carrick is a mystery. He the druid in this story, and he’s just about to take his vows as an Ovate. Vows that will cut him off from his own society, but will allow him to travel in time, something he does believe in.

There’s that sticky time thing again. We don’t know exactly when Carrick is in time, but he’s way closer Darius than to us, both in time and in location. Carrick is in what we will call Ireland, and maybe less than a century before Darius’ Rome in Senator, Mine. And he has even less idea what he’s in for than Darius did. But he is questioning whether he’s ready to take his vows.

Carrick is tending the fires the night before the Summer Solstice, just outside a standing stone circle. It’s the longest night. From his perspective, one of the fay asks him if he wants one last night with a woman, before he has to be celibate forever. He’s a man, of course he says yes.

Anya is dropped off on in the middle of his lonely vigil. She knows she contracted for a 1Night Stand. She did not expect Carrick, or time travel.

They each get one perfect, beautiful night. A glorious sunrise directly over the standing stones of the henge. And a choice that comes all too soon.

Escape Rating B-: The relationship between Anya and Carrick is sensuous and beautiful, but the problem is that as a love story, this just wasn’t complete for me. Senator, Mine may have needed less backstory because the Roman period is so familiar. The Celtic Druids are very mysterious, and not a lot is known. With such a short story, the problem is that not a lot is known about Carrick’s background or the choices he is facing. We know he’s unhappy, but why? What is driving him to this lonely life? Being ripped out of time is a desperate choice, even for love. I needed to know more to make this work as well as Senator, Mine, but I still had fun with the parts of the story that encapsulated their night by the henge.

Review: Senator, Mine by Kerry Adrienne

Format read: ebook from Author
Formats available: ebook
Genre: Time travel romance, erotic romance, novella
Series: All Mine #1, 1Night Stand
Length: 40 pages
Publisher: Decadent Publishing
Purchasing Info:Author’s Website, Publisher’s Website, Goodreads, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, All Romance Ebooks

Eleanor’s romantic tour of Italy shatters when her long-time boyfriend dumps her in Pompeii. Hoping an evening with a handsome Roman might save her trip, she contacts Madame Eve at 1Night Stand, then goes out to explore, buying a small golden signet in a mysterious antiquities shop near the Forum.

Darius, a hard-working Senator in Ancient Rome, is puzzled by the Sibyl’s words: You will not find love in your lifetime. Following her directions, he spots Eleanor, a barbarian wearing his stolen senator’s ring.

A night spent together may be just what they both need to break down the columns of time that stand between them.

Decadent Publishing’s 1Night Stand series books have a fairly simple premise. Two people, occasionally using a fairly loose definition of the word “people,” contract with a mysterious being known as Madame Eve, or some name close to that, for one night of sex with their perfect match. The parties always think it’s just for one night, but Madame Eve is a much better matchmaker than they realize. What they find, for those willing to take a chance, is a lifetime of happiness.

After all, if someone is your perfect match for one perfect night, why wouldn’t they be your perfect match for a lifetime?

But occasionally, Madame Eve faces a real challenge. When the Sibyl predicts that Senator Darius will not find love in his lifetime he believes he is condemned to live alone. Or live in a loveless, soulless marriage as so many of his fellow senators do in the Imperium of Rome.

Instead, the Sibyl tells him to meet with a mysterious Eve.

In the 21st century Eleanor has just purchased the Senatorial ring of Darius from an antiquities shop after contracting with Madame Eve. Eleanor, at least, thinks she knows what she’s getting into with her 1Night Stand, but she thinks it’s just a date. Or a date with benefits.

Eleanor was dumped by her chump of an ex at the beginning of her Roman Holiday. She’s discovered that she doesn’t miss the man, but she does miss the confidence he stole from her. So, a 1Night Stand it is.

But the Sibyl and the ring, with the help of Madame Eve (whoever or whatever she is) take   Eleanor and Darius outside of time, to a place where they can have their 1Night Stand, even though they should never have met. Ever.

They both want to live, for just one night. He wants to forget his responsibilities. She wants to forget her mistakes.

He thinks she’s a barbaraian. She’s sure he’s pretending to be from Ancient Rome, that his ignorance of computers and modern conveniences must be an act, part of the setup.

And they are more comfortable with each other than either of them have ever been with anyone of their own time and place.

But once they figure out the truth, can they find a way to be together, forever?

Escape Rating B+: This was delicious. Both Eleanor and Darius are well-developed characters, which is surprising but delightful for a story of this length. It helps a lot that Ancient Rome is a time and place that readers are familiar with, so it was easy to fill in the blanks (This is the I, Claudius period, give or take a bit)

While I wish this were longer, because I would have loved to explore more of the story at every point, it totally works. The reader understands the motivations for both hero and heroine entering into the 1Night Stand arrangement, and their exploration of each other is beautifully done, not just on the sexual side but also the emotional and cultural side as they figure out that they really are from different times and places, and that it doesn’t matter.

I really wish this was longer. I’d love to know how they worked things out when Darius got to the 21st century.

Ebook Review Central, Carina Press, July 2012

The July 2012 Carina Press titles, at least when it comes to which ones got the most reviews, could definitely be said to owe something to the “Fifty Shades” effect.

The hottest books — in the erotic sense — were also definitely the hottest titles in the reviewing numbers.

Fifty shades of tie-ins!  Although the popularity of the book opened doors for more books that show a kinkier side of sex, it also spawned products in areas that the author couldn’t possibly have dreamed of. This one from Etsy may be the furthest after “Laters, baby” as later can get.

I’d much rather (make that much, much rather) get back to the Carina books.

First, I’d like to give a shout-out to Natasha Hoar’s urban fantasy title, The Ravenous Dead, which was one of the featured for Carina last month. Its date of publication seems to have changed, so now it’s on this month’s list. But I can’t feature it again, dagnabbit! Because it absolutely earned a featured slot this month, too. But each book only gets one bite at the apple, and The Ravenous Dead have already bitten.

So who are this month’s featured titles for Carina? I’m so glad you asked.

The number one featured title was so far out in first place that the sheer quantity of reviews is worth mentioning. The Theory of Attraction by Delphine Dryden attracted over 40 reviews, all good or better. Those are pretty big numbers for an ebook-only title. What was it about The Theory of Attraction? Yes, it’s a BDSM story like Fifty Shades, with the virtue that it’s a heck of a lot shorter. Ms. Dryden’s story is also a geek love story, with two socially awkward scientists as the hero and heroine. Lots of readers identified with the couple and their geeky social circle. The geek dom made for a different twist on the trope: the hero was intelligent but not super-rich. RT Book Reviews described it as “erotic romance done right.”

In the second position we have another erotic romance, and another boundary-stretching and review-grabbing title as well. Sharing Hailey by Samantha Ann King pushed at the erotic romance envelope in a different direction. Hailey has always had a crush on her two best friends, Mark and Tony. But Mark and Tony are best buds, and don’t want to mess up their friendship by forcing Hailey to choose between them. Solution: the three of them get together! It’s perfect until Hailey’s abusive ex returns and tries to spoil everything. This story has 29 reviewers behind it, so far, all of them generally thinking it was pretty good or better. Again, 29 reviewers is a lot of positive feedback. This one looks worth checking out.

It was much more difficult to decide on the third spot. Two books were very close. But by a whisker, the featured slot goes to Rogue’s Pawn by Jeffe Kennedy. Rogue’s Pawn is the first book in her Covenant of Thorns series, and it’s a contemporary fantasy/urban fantasy with a touch of fantasy romance. Gwynn the bored academic in 21st century America crosses over to Fae at Devil’s Tower Wyoming and becomes a powerful but totally untrained sorceress–one who nearly gets killed as a danger to herself and others in her first day on the other side. Everyone wants a piece of her, and everyone wants her to be their pawn. Only one fae, a trickster named Rogue, might possibly have some of Gwynn’s better interests at heart. If Rogue has a heart. This is one twisted, dark and decadent fantasy world.

If I were giving honorable mentions, and I can, one would go to Karen Erickson this month for A Scandalous Affair.

Ebook Review Central will be back in two weeks (no issue next week because of the Labor Day Holiday!) with Dreamspinner Press.

Stacking the Shelves (15)

There’s a terrible old joke about being on a seafood diet. You know the one, “I see food and I eat it”. The kitty in the picture may be the only one who can get away with it–or the only one who looks cute while saying it, anyway.

I think there should be the biblioholic’s version of that joke. “I see books and I want to read them!” It doesn’t make nearly as good of a pun, but it probably explains the tiny meeping I hear from my iPad as it complains about all those books I stuff into it.

Maybe I’m just hearing things.

What’s stacking your shelves this week?
