The Sunday Post AKA What’s on my (Mostly Virtual) Nightstand 3-19-17

Sunday Post

This week seems to have headed downhill – and not in a good way. I started with A- and ended at C, with one complete failure. Not the best way to go. But next week looks much better, she said, having already finished Monday’s book and started on Tuesday’s, and being much, much happier about both of them. Even though I am a bit nervous about having four tour books in a single week. C’est la vie.

The Sunday Post AKA What’s on my (Mostly Virtual) Nightstand 3-5-17

Sunday Post

This was a week that started well and petered out by the end. Just as I was planning to start Friday’s book, the Amazon Web Services glitch hit in a funny way. I could see all the many, many books in my kindle app, but the one I planned to read just wouldn’t download. That put me a bit behind, and changed the schedule. I finally did get my downloads back and started it, and it looks good, but it was a bit too densely packed to finish in a night. And I’d just finished listening to Phryne, and here we are.

So many books, so little time. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Sunday Post

I had originally planned on reading All Our Wrong Todays for Friday’s review, and I’ll probably get around to it eventually. But this week I listened to Lincoln in the Bardo, which I probably won’t review because I just couldn’t get enough of a handle on it to cogently talk about it. It is more than a bit weird, and not in the science fictional sense. Although All Our Wrong Todays is science fiction, it is also weird, and it felt like it was weird in the same way as Lincoln in the Bardo. I just didn’t feel like reading them back to back. So I didn’t.

Except for Pardonable Lies, this coming week is one where I pulled stuff out of the middle, or at least not the top, of the virtually towering TBR pile. Monday is Presidents Day, and while I’m not in the mood for anything serious, it did seem like an opportunity to pick something set in the period. A lot of my friends have enthusiastically recommended Thieftaker, so this seemed like the time. I’m halfway through, and so far, they were right!

And we’re coming up on March soon, which means it’s time for the Month of Maisie Read Along tour. I’ve been catching up on the older titles while moving forward with the new as part of this tour each year, and it’s been a blast! I’m looking forward to reading the latest book in the series, In This Grave Hour, in a couple of weeks.

I’m looking at next week’s schedule and realizing that I have no idea which rabbit I’m going to pull out of my hat on Friday. Which makes next week slightly more predictable than this past week, where I threw the whole thing in a blender. Whacking my leg a couple of weeks ago didn’t turn out to be half so disastrous to my reading as the cold I caught. It is just impossible to ignore a drippy nose, especially when it’s your own!

The Sunday Post AKA What’s on my (Mostly Virtual) Nightstand 2-5-17

Sunday Post

This has been one of those weeks I wouldn’t wish on anyone. Galen was sick all week. There’s a bad cold, or possibly the flu, going around and it caught him. The alternate explanation is “con crud”. For those blissfully not familiar, con crud is the crap you come down with after spending a week at a conference or convention. You run around like crazy, you wear yourself down, and you spend a lot of time packed into heated rooms with LOTS of strangers. Airborne diseases are, well, airborne, and stuff happens.

Tuesday I fell. No big deal. I could tell I’d tweaked something in my left ankle, but I’ve done that before. Entirely too many times. No big deal. At least not until the bruise on my right leg swelled to epic proportions. Literally epic. It felt like someone shoved a grapefruit under my skin. It hurt so much I couldn’t walk. Scared us both half to death. After all the drama, and there was plenty of it, it turns out that my ankle really is cracked, but there’s nothing structurally wrong with my right leg. I just have a gigantic (and extremely colorful) bruise from above my knee to below my ankle.

And I caught the con crud. This week’s reading schedule may not survive contact with reality. Or with the goop in my head.

The Sunday Post AKA What’s on my (Mostly Virtual) Nightstand 1-29-17

Sunday Post

It seems to have been a B+ weeks this week. With the exception of One Fell Sweep, although I liked all of this week’s books very much they just didn’t have that special “something” that makes the difference between a B+ and an A-. And if I could codify that “something” I could probably sell the secret and make a fortune. Even though I suspect that whatever that “something” is, it’s different for every reader. One Fell Sweep, of course, had that “something” in a big way.

No winners this week. LOTS of winners next week. Both the Best of 2016 Giveaway Hop AND the Jeepers its January Giveaway Hop end on January 31. Plus the two book giveaways that end at the end of the week. Books and gift cards for more books make some of the best presents.

And I did it to myself again. Next week I have four book tours. All the books look very interesting, and I’ll be glad I read them, but being locked in on four days can be confining, especially if one of the books turns out to simply be long. Now that I have a day job, I can’t stay up all night to read. Maybe I should say that I shouldn’t stay up all night to read. There are some books that are too good to put down!

The Sunday Post AKA What’s on my (Mostly Virtual) Nightstand 1-22-17

Sunday Post

And this is the ALA Midwinter edition of the Sunday Post. My nightstand has temporarily moved to downtown Atlanta for the weekend, and I’m probably not getting much reading done. But the show, as they say, must go on. And I’ll be home tomorrow to cuddle the kittehs and recuperate from the conference. On the one hand, since we didn’t have to travel anywhere, I have a tiny flare of hope that I won’t come down with “con crud”. And on that other hand, I miss those hours on the plane when there isn’t much to do but read. Oh well, the Annual Conference in June is in Chicago. That flight will give me a couple of hours at least.

The Sunday Post AKA What’s on my (Mostly Virtual) Nightstand 1-15-17

Sunday Post

This was a weird week. Somewhere around Sunday I realized that I wasn’t getting anywhere reading serious books, even the ones I wanted to read, and just scrapped the whole idea. I basically hit a slump and just needed to read stuff for fun. So I did. I picked up some stuff that I’ve been hoping to read but never got a round tuit, and had a blast. Obviously I need to be way more careful about stacking up too many of one thing, unless it’s for fun.

I enjoyed Clean Sweep so much that I couldn’t resist reading the whole series in one fell swoop. Or one swell foop. So Sweep in Peace is coming up this week and One Fell Sweep either next week or the week after. If you haven’t read the series, just let me say that it definitely lives up to its rave reviews.
