Sunday Post

I would say that it is beginning to look a lot like Xmas, but that was last weekend here in Atlanta, Not the holiday itself, but the snow.

Today is, however, in the middle of Hanukkah, so for those who celebrate the Festival of Lights, Chag Sameach, Gut Yom Tov and Gut Yontiff. That last is a phrase I haven’t heard since childhood, but was the form of “Happy Holiday” that my grandparents used. Whatever you celebrate, the best of the season to you and yours.

The weather outside is frightful. Wet, cold, nasty stuff. Snow. It’s warm inside, though, and there are plenty of books to read and plenty of feline attention available. They do make very nice lap warmers – when they can be bothered to sit still, that is.

The year is definitely winding down, and blog hop season is certainly winding up. And we’re all making lists – lists of holiday presents and lists of best books for the year now passing. And occasionally even combining the two!

Sunday Post

It’s so hard to believe that it’s December. Especially since it has been in the 60s in Atlanta this week. But it is, and the winter holidays are just around the corner.

It’s also blog hop season. It looks like I’ll be giving something away every week between now and Xmas. Which reminds me. Reading Reality is an Amazon Associate, and if you click on any of the links in my posts, and then do some of your Xmas shopping at Amazon, I’ll get a teeny, tiny percentage from everything you buy. It won’t cost you anything you weren’t already planning to spend, but it will help with funding the prizes I give away at all the blog hops. Thank you so much for all of your participation and comments and good wishes throughout the year.

Because of the Thanksgiving holiday, I managed to get one really, really long book read. I absolutely adored A Plague of Giants by Kevin Hearne. Now I just have to find a day to post my review. But if you know someone who loves epic fantasy and you’re trying to think of a book to get them for the holidays, A Plague of Giants was marvelous from beginning to end.

Sunday Post

We are Microsoft, resistance is futile, you (or at least your computer) will be absorbed.

We’re back from Thanksgiving. And my computer had a conversation with itself while we were away, did a Windows 10 update, and killed the driver for my old graphics card. Admittedly, my desktop machine was getting a bit long in the tooth, but it worked fine. Until it didn’t. Suddenly and without warning. GRRRRR! Galen decided that replacing it was simpler than fixing it, and so it has been put out to pasture, replaced by a new box. Which of course, needs a whole bunch of stuff installed. So much for our Sunday plans.

It’s still good to be home. We had a great time, and I always love Friendsgiving in Houston, but it is great to be home. The kitties seem to have achieved detente, but they still missed us. And we missed them.

The Sunday Post AKA What’s on my (Mostly Virtual) Nightstand 11-12-17

Sunday Post

As I said earlier this week in this Facebook post. this has been a really sucky week. Not just that life is what happens when you’re making other plans, but that life is sometimes too damn short.

When I’m confronted with something I can’t get past or over, my usual response is to retreat into a good book. This week was no exception. I didn’t realize it until afterwards, but the book I retreated into, Murder in Montparnasse by Kerry Greenwood, was also a perfect book for Veterans Day, AKA Remembrance Day, celebrated yesterday on the anniversary of “at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month” marking the end of hostilities of World War I.

I do have a week of lovely books to look forward to. I know because I’ve finished two and am in the middle of the third. But I’m planning to make plenty of time to hug my husband, pet the cat (and be hugged and kissed by the cat, which is strange, surprising and very sweet) and get in touch with friends. Life is short.

The Sunday Post AKA What’s on my (Mostly Virtual) Nightstand 11-5-17

Sunday Post

It was a B+ week, all the way around. Not a bad ending for a week that began in the midst of moving hell, and after losing our Clown Princess. Freddie is starting to emerge from his hidey-holes, and we might get him a playmate this weekend. At the best of times he absorbs a lot of attention, and we know he must be lonely when we are both at work. Mellie was elderly and didn’t roughhouse with him, but they did like to stay within sight of each other – and now she’s gone.

Now that we are at least post-Halloween, the Christmas books don’t feel quite as unseasonable as they did in September. The year is definitely winding down. I like the crisp weather, but I hate that it gets dark so much earlier. The end of Daylight Savings Time, even with the extra hour’s sleep, is not my favorite thing. Speaking of which, did you set your clocks back last night? Or did they set themselves back for you?

By the time you read this we should have spent the first night in our new home. We probably can’t find a damn thing, and I’ll bet we’re exhausted, but we’ll have moved and be trying to figure out where amongst all the boxes are enough supplies and equipment to make breakfast and some morning caffeine.  And of course locate a good book to read over that breakfast.

Let the unpacking commence!

The Sunday Post AKA What’s on my (Mostly Virtual) Nightstand 10-22-17

Sunday Post

As tempted as I am, I’m not going to repeat the Kermit flail gif from yesterday’s Stacking the Shelves. We’re moving this week. The packers are coming on Friday, and the movers on Saturday. I’m trapped between YAY! and OMG! and YAY! and OMG! on endless repeat.

Mellie the cat already knows that something is up, and she’s even grumpier than usual. Freddie is going to love the new place – he’ll have more room to zoom around, and even stairs to careen up and down. But Mellie is a little old lady cat and we’re worried the stairs might be a bit much for her at her advanced age – she’s 17 1/2 and well into senior cathood.

And I have plenty of reviews coming up this week. As usual. I have to admit that I’ll kind of be seeing what happens with Wednesday’s and Friday’s reviews. Both books look really good, but possibly a bit more serious than I’ll be able to cope with in the chaos. We’ll see.
