The Sunday Post AKA What’s on my (Mostly Virtual) Nightstand 7-7-19

Sunday Post

I hope all the USians reading this had a terrific July 4th! We’re in a new neighborhood, so didn’t know how long – or how many days – the fireworks would be “bursting in air” here. The answer turns out to be one night and only one night – which is fine. We’ve lived plenty of places where it goes on all week – and it stops being remotely fun after midnight on the first night.

This was also Hecate’s first Independence Day, and it doesn’t seem like the noise bothered her much – nor does it seem to matter much to either Freddie or Lucifer. Which is good.

Speaking of Lucifer – or a Lucifer, sorta/kinda, we finished watching Good Omens over the weekend – and it was marvelous. If you love the book – watch the series. And if you’ve never read the book – watch the series. Oh, just watch it already. I miss Sir Terry. I still have the final book in the Discworld left to read. I just don’t want it to be over. Even though I know it is.

There’s booming in the other room. My husband is playing Cat Quest, and it’s adorable. Cats going on adventures! With puns. Lots and lots of puns. The game is adorably cute AND fun to play.

I’m still digging out from the usual post-conference disorganization. There tends to be both a post-conference boost and a post-conference crash. So many great panels. So many excellent speakers. So many, many, many bright shiny new books. Followed immediately by the rush to get home, the continuing aching of the feet, and the need to figure out what happens next. Getting home at 1 in the morning didn’t help any.

But it’s good to be home. The kitties missed us and we missed them. Watching them over the kitty-cam is NOT the same!

Sunday Post

As I said yesterday, while you read this I’m sweating to death in Washington DC at the ALA Annual Conference. Or maybe not. The weather report says cloudy, rainy, thunderboomy and in the mid 80s, so it might not be too bad. But climate’s what you expect and weather is what you get, so by the time I get there, it could be anything. Yes, I know that Atlanta is not exactly known for its cool summers but DC is semi-reclaimed swampland – it gets even muggier there than it does here. And the midwinter conference will be in Philadelphia. In January. I can hardly wait. I’d insert a sarcastic emoji here – but what would that look like?

Meanwhile, back on the blog, I may be out of town but I have plenty of stuff queued up and ready to roll while I’m away. Probably picking up more books.

If it wasn’t for the last minute, nothing would ever get done. Or at least it certainly seems that way. We’re off for the American Library Association Annual Conference at the end of the week and it feels like there are suddenly a million-and-one things to do before we go. Only because there probably are.

The cats are NOT going to be best pleased. They never are when their human servitors abscond from their duties for any length of time longer than a catnap. Come to think of it, not even then. We’re obviously supposed to be at their beck and call even when they’re sleeping!

This has been the drippiest, rainiest, gloomiest weekend ever. You’d think it wasn’t summer around here, but it is. At least it’s cool. But wet. Very, very wet.

It’s terrific reading weather. Every cloud has a silver lining! (p.s. I’m expecting the little old guy with the animals trailing behind him in pairs to march by any minute now!)

Sunday Post

This was certainly the week that was. Was what, I’m not sure, but was. It’s amazing how fast those 3-day weekends whiz by.

It is definitely summer here in Atlanta. It also seems to be summer on Reading Reality, as I have 3 books with “Summer” in the title scheduled this week! Serendipity reigns supreme!

Speaking of reigning, I have a kitten curled between my feet again. This seems to be one of her new rituals. As soon as I pull my chair up to my desk, she settles in between my feet – and usually ON my feet as well. It’s adorable. She’s adorable. But I’m afraid to move…guess I’ll just get more bloggy stuff done today!

I’ve just noticed that Amy almost took over the blog this week. Maybe I should just let her do that sometime and see what shenanigans happen?

I did read some really long, involved, complicated and interesting books this week, that will show up on the blog eventually. But big books take big time, even for me, so I really appreciate Amy pinch hitting for me!

Tomorrow’s Memorial Day Holiday helps too! If you’re in the U.S. and have the three-day weekend, welcome to the unofficial start of summer. I don’t know about where you are, but here in Atlanta summer has arrived with a vengeance. It’s in the 90s, and it’s going to be in the 90s all week with no rain or cooling in sight.

As I type this today there is a kitten snoozing under my chair. I’m kind of afraid to move for fear that I’ll either step on her, roll the chair over her, or just plain wake her up. She’s only quiet and not totally intrusive when she’s sleeping. She’s adorable but extremely bouncy and pouncy when awake!

The Sunday Post AKA What’s on my (Mostly Virtual) Nightstand 5-19-19

Sunday Post

It’s  hard to believe that Memorial Day is next weekend. It feels early somehow. Also this is the first year that we haven’t lived in Duluth, GA. The town lines all the major thoroughfares with commemoratives for relatives and ancestors of current residents who served in one of this nation’s armed services, whether that service was during wartime or not. It does bring the significance of the holiday home as you drive by. I say that even though I have a serious problem with all of the markers being crosses. I understand that a simple wooden cross is really easy to create (and inexpensive for the town) but also feels like a slap in the face to anyone who served and was a member of another faith – or no faith at all.

I’ll get down off my soapbox now.

Our black cat, Lucifer, has finally started coming downstairs again during the day. We’re beginning to wonder if the poor baby has seasonal affective disorder as he kind of hibernated for most of the winter. But he’s been increasingly out and about in the house, and its wonderful to see him when we can actually see him. After all, he has the perfect camouflage to hide in the shadows at night. He’s still my nighttime reading buddy, but I love seeing him during the day!

The Sunday Post AKA What’s on my (Mostly Virtual) Nightstand 5-5-19

Sunday Post

It’s been kind of a dark and stormy weekend here in the Atlanta area, which makes it a perfect weekend to stay in and READ! Of course, I do tend to think that all weekends are perfect weekends to read.

We did see Avengers: Endgame last Sunday and it was AWESOME! Not perfect, but terrific all the same. It’s amazing how fast those three hours go by – even without a bathroom break. If you haven’t seen it yet I don’t want to spoil it for you, but I will give you two tips. Number one, bring tissues, you’ll need them. Number two, in spite of the way that Marvel has trained us over the past 22 movies, there are no end trailer features or Easter Eggs. When the credits begin, the movie is over. That’s a good thing, because you will need to make tracks to the nearest facilities!
