The theme for this year’s hop images from The Mommy Island & The Kids Did It has been cats. Every single one of them has been adorable, and so many have reminded me of cats that have passed through my life and on to the Rainbow Bridge. This particular image is very like Erasmus, the dumbest, sweetest cat who ever lived. Also the most bewildered, as this picture will attest.

But speaking of orange cats, George is experiencing his very first winter, as he was born in the spring of 2020. He seems to think that that falling leaves have to watched every single moment. If we get snow this winter I expect him to be utterly fascinated. And we’ll be fascinated watching him.

First of all, the above may be the cutest hop graphic ever. But then, I love cats. I can’t imagine ours in the snow – although it certainly would make our Lucifer easy to find – if we had snow.

Winter mostly deals the Atlanta area a glancing blow – but it is coming. Even if local temperatures during this blog hop will reach up into the 60s a few times. But we do get enough winter that the trees lose their leaves – which fascinates the cats no end. Falling leaves make GREAT kitty television.

I do not miss the winters in two of our previous homes – Chicago and Anchorage. Both are equally miserable this time of year. They are also both terrific cities to live in, but their winters – recently arrived in Chicago and long arrived in Anchorage – are nothing to sneeze at unless you have the inevitable cold or flu. Then you’re sneezing a lot.

But it’s chilly enough here that we’ve brought out the cushy blanket for our bed – which has motivated all three cats to not only sleep with us, but to sleep ON the bed instead of UNDER the bed during the day. And we’re happy to make them happy!

Still, ’tis the season for wintry weather, holiday shopping and curling up with a good book and a cuddly fur-person or two. Winter is coming. Here in Atlanta, that may only be theoretical (it’s 60 here today) but it is coming. It may have already come where you are. In fact, it may have already come with a vengeance where you are!

As I’ve mentioned before, we have moved around a lot. We also moved over the summer. Last winter, the entire second floor of the house was freezing all winter. We’re still finding the hot spots and cold spots in this house, but we’ve already discovered we’re a location for one of Murphy’s Laws. The coldest room in the house is the master bathroom. It has two outside walls and it’s bloody freezing. Unfortunately that is one room where one is guaranteed to be spending at least some time partially unclothed. Talk about freezing your buns off!

The warmest room in the house is the downstairs  half bath, which, as you might imagine, only solves part of the problem with the above.

As both of us have a tendency to use the “throne room” as an otherwise cozy place to read, this is a bit of a problem – but I’m sure we’re motivated to figure it out.

But speaking of reading, winter is a terrific time to curl up with a good book, a cup of your hot beverage of choice, and a cuddly cat, dog, or other warm furry creature. Winter is definitely coming. Or perhaps it’s already here where you are. It’s chilly and wet in Atlanta, but nothing like the winters we went through in Chicago and Anchorage. In Chicago, you know it’s cold when you are standing on the platform waiting for the “L” and you see the pigeons huddling under the heatlamps on the other side!

I may miss lots of things about both Anchorage and Chicago, but winter is not one of them. Even here in Atlanta, the chillier weather makes a good excuse for staying home and curling up with a cat or two and a good book or ten.
