Stuck in a Good Book Giveaway Hop

Welcome to the Stuck in a Good Book Giveaway Hop, hosted by Stuck in Books!

So, what books have you been stuck in lately? Books are like potato chips, you can’t read, or love, just one.

Most recently, the book I got seriously stuck in was Provenance by Ann Leckie. I couldn’t put it down, and was sneaking into the bathroom at work to read just a few more pages off my iPhone. And I don’t really like reading on my iPhone. I just know this book is going to be on next year’s Hugo ballot, because I can’t imagine I’ll be the only person nominating it.

As always, there are just a couple of books that have gone above and beyond an A grade right up into A+. One of those for me, this year, was The Guns Above by Robyn Bennis, which was just a perfect blend of steampunk, heroine’s journey, military sf and outright snark. I just loved this one from beginning to end, and really, really hope its the beginning of a series.

On the romance front, this year’s hands-down winner was Ilona Andrews Hidden Legacy series. Even though I didn’t remember reading the first book, Burn for Me, several years ago, as soon as I picked up Wildfire I was right back in the thick of it. Wildfire and the series finale, White Hot, completely sucked me in and left me with one hell of a book hangover.

Last but very definitely not least, Embrace the Romance, Pets in Space 2. This is a huge collection of science fiction romance novellas, and so far, all the ones I’ve read have been awesome. But there is so much to love in this book that I still have plenty left to get lost in.

It’s that time again!

What book have you been stuck in recently?

Last year, for me, it was Written in My Own Heart’s Blood by Diana Gabaldon. Whenever there is a new Outlander book, I am so there.

This year, it’s been more science fiction. There is something about the worlds created in Ian Tregillis’ The Mechanical (review), Max Gladstone’s Craft Sequence (see review of the latest, Last First Snow) and Seth Dickinson’s first novel, The Traitor Baru Cormorant (review at The Book Pushers) that just keeps my mind churning over all the implications of all the strange new ways of viewing the universe.

And there are always old favorites. I love the world of Robin D. Owen’s Celta series, even when I don’t adore an individual volume, like last year’s Heart Fire (review at The Book Pushers). But I got an eARC of Heart Legacy, and I’m pleased to say that she’s back on form. This installment was marvelous. And Celta seems like a relatively liveable place – I wouldn’t mind being stuck there for real. And that makes me think of all the ways that the society works and doesn’t, and what makes it seem like such a great place.

What book have you been stuck in recently?

written in my own hearts blood by diana gabaldonEarlier this summer, I read the latest doorstop in Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series, Written in My Own Heart’s Blood. (Of course there’s a review).

Like many readers, I love the series. As soon as I started the story, I was instantly swept away, and it felt like no time at all since the last book, five long years ago. (It probably helps that the action picked up just where the last one left off.)

But the Outlander saga is intense. Bad things happen to so many people that we have come to love, and it can be heart-wrenching to see the characters in pain or especially danger. This is a story that wraps around your heart.

As much as I was enthralled by every single page, I was also torn. There is so much trauma. I had to put the book aside for a day to let the events sink in before I could return and finish the story.

So I was stuck in the book in the middle, and then again at the end, not wanting to leave “my friends” behind. Book hangovers are marvelous (and frustrating)

I’m giving away a gift card to the winner’s choice of Amazon or B&N, so that the winner can help themselves to one or two more books that they can get “Stuck In”!
