The Sunday Post AKA What’s On My (Mostly Virtual) Nightstand 8-18-13

Sunday Post

This will be my 1,000th published post. I’m stunned and amazed. When I started this blog back in April 2011 I had no idea that it would keep going this long, or that it would be so much fun. Or so much fun work.

I’m also grateful that the word count isn’t nearly as easy a statistic to find!

But thank you all for coming along on the journey, and reading any or all of those 1,000 posts. You’re awesome.

Meanwhile, here’s what’s happening…

Lovestruck Giveaway Hop

Lovestruck Blog Hop

They say that lightning never strikes twice in the same place. But it looks like love does, because the Lovestruck Giveaway Hop is back!

This year, the Hop is hosted by Under the Covers Book Blog. Organizing one of these hops has got to be, well, a labor of love.

Speaking of love, let’s talk about new, or new to me, authors that I’ve fallen in love with this year. This is about being lovestruck after all. ♥

Redemption by Susannah SandlinThe author who has had me scrambling to find all her books this year has been Suzanne Johnson/Susannah Sandlin. I’ve lost a couple of weekends to her marvelous stories because her Penton Legacy series (written as Sandlin) is pretty much vampire romance crack, once I started it I couldn’t stop until I reached the current end. And I want the next one yesterday. They just seemed like the perfect blend of alpha heroes in need of redemption and strong women in need of someone to respect their strength. With a perfectly evil enemy.

Royal Street by Suzanne JohnsonThen there’s her Sentinels of New Orleans series, written as Suzanne Johnson, which is the one I discovered first. New Orleans is one of my favorite cities. (We almost moved there). But the blend of the old city, the historic undead, the shapeshifters, with magic! It’s utterly cool. And the wizard coming into her own. Not his own, you note, her own. DJ is a fantastic heroine, snarky and kick-ass and sometimes in over her head. The portrayal of the post-Katrina cleanup of New Orleans in Royal Street was incredibly poignant and heartbreaking.

Because I want you to have a chance to be lovestruck by your own favorite author or series, I’m giving away a USD$10 gift card to Amazon or Barnes & Noble (winner’s choice). To enter, use the Rafflecopter below:

The Sunday Post AKA What’s On My (Mostly Virtual) Nightstand 8-11-13

Sunday Post

I’m surprised by how strong a reaction I’ve had to the death of Dr. Barbara Mertz, better known as author Elizabeth Peters (also Barbara Michaels). Probably because the character she created, Amelia Peabody, made such an indelible impression from the first book I Last Camel Died at Noon by Elizabeth Peterslistened to, The Last Camel Died at Noon, undoubtedly helped by the marvelous interpretation of Barbara Rosenblat. The series is written from Amelia’s first-person perspective, and I doubt that anyone was ever neutral. Readers either loved Amelia’s “voice” or couldn’t stand her. She mostly skewered the haters with her steel-tipped parasol.

But in addition to a cracking good adventure, the Amelia Peabody stories always portrayed the long-term romance of a happily married couple who sometimes (often) argued ferociously. They also gave the reader an absolutely fantastic glimpse into the dawn of scientific archeology in Egypt, complete with scalawags, ne’er-do-wells, fortune hunters and thieves. And every season, another dead body to investigate. If you like strong, intelligent and extremely opinionated heroines, start with Crocodile on the Sandbank.

Hot Summer Romance Blog Hop

Hot Summer Romance Blog Hop

Welcome to the Hot Summer Romance Blog Hop, sponsored by the Insatiable Reads Book Tour!

She looks like she’s melting, doesn’t she? She must have just finished a really hot romance! But what kind of romance?

What’s your favorite?

There’s the ever popular “friends into lovers”, but sometimes “enemies into lovers” has a lot more heat.

There’s the tried-and-true “fated mate” syndrome (not one of my personal favorites) but there’s also the arranged marriage and the faked marriage that become real ones.

Sometimes the sex comes first (pun definitely intended) and love happens later. Lessons in seduction can make a terrific (and terrifically hot) story. Of course, there’s also good new-fashioned porn-without-plot, but that’s not romance, it’s just hot in there. Or out there. Or wherever!

Is it hot in here or is it just me?

~~~~~~GIVEAWAY~~~~~~
There are two marvelous grand prizes on this hop:
  • A Kindle Fire
  • A $50 Amazon.com gift certificate
For a chance for the grand prize, leave a comment answering the following question: what is your favorite type of romance book?
I’m also giving away a $10 gift certificate. To enter for my giveaway, use the Rafflecopter:
If you think you know how to bring about the end of the world, head on over to the Apocalypse Blog Hop and post your nefarious suggestion. One lucky commenter will win a $10 Amazon Gift Card, with which they will hopefully purchase a book or two with a dystopian or post-apocalyptic story.
Maybe the world isn’t exactly coming to an end?
I’m pretty sure that the real overlords, who are of course, our felines, would not let us get out of our petting, scritching and kibble-providing duties so easily by letting us blow up the Earth. Unless they have found better staff on another planet.
They’ll never tell. They just brainwash us with cute.
Welcome to the Apocalypse Blog Hop, hosted by Heidi of Rainy Day Ramblings, Maja of The Nocturnal Library and Christy of Love of Books.
It’s the end of the world as we know it. Maybe we do feel fine?
Dystopia with clock from wikipediaSometimes I give talks to library groups (or librarian groups) on romance and other genre books. One of the questions is usually about post-apocalyptic and dystopian fiction, and what the heck are they, anyway?
I generally say it’s about where are we going and how did we end up in this handbasket? If the society knows how it ended up in the handbasket, it’s post-apocalyptic. If they don’t know or don’t care, it’s just dystopian.
Dearly departed by Lia HabelDearly, Departed by Lia Habel (reviewed here) is still the best YA post-apocalyptic steampunk zombie romance I’ve ever read. And it’s still the only YA post-apocalyptic steampunk zombie romance I’ve ever read. Dearly, Beloved is on my TBR stack.
On the other hand, Black Dog Blues by Rhys Ford is a totally excellent (reviewed at Book Lovers Inc) bit of post-apocalyptic urban fantasy. Not the only, but very recent and quite, quite good.
The Sunday Post AKA What’s On My (Mostly Virtual) Nightstand 6-23-13
Sunday Post
Today is pretty much nervous Sunday here at chez Reading Reality. Also frantic Sunday, both at the same time.
I’m having outpatient surgery tomorrow, to remove a kidney stone that has lodged itself somewhere unpleasant. The surgery itself sounds kind of cool. They’re going to blast the little beastie with lasers to break it up so it gets the hell out of Dodge. The problem is that “Dodge” in this instance is somewhere in my insides.
ALA Chicago Conference logoIf all goes well, and it should, on Thursday we’re off to the American Library Association Annual Conference. This year it’s in one of our old hometowns, Sweet Home Chicago.  Galen and I are looking forward to catching up with friends.
Speaking of catching up…
2nd Annual SFR Brigade Midsummer Blog Hop
SFR Brigade Midsummer Blog Hop
Welcome to the Second Annual Midsummer Blog Hop, sponsored by the SFR Brigade. Woo-hoo!
The theme for this year’s Midsummer Blog Hop is out of this world. No really, this is a science fiction romance group, so that’s the theme. Which “out of this world” setting is your favorite? Or my favorite, as the case may be.
USS Enterprise NCC-1701If I had to pick an imagined future that I would want to live in, it would still, even all these years later, be Gene Roddenberry’s vision of the future from the original Star Trek series. By the time that Kirk & Co. flew the original Enterprise out of the San Francisco shipyards in 2245, the Federation seems to have solved most of the problems that we have today. It’s not just that it would take a “post-scarcity economy” to come up with something like the Prime Directive, but that everyone on the Enterprise, and her namesakes A, B, C, D and E all seem to enjoy their jobs and have such purpose. Somedays I envy them. The universe of the reboot seems to have gone to hell in handcart. I wouldn’t want to live there, even if it is entertaining to visit.
What fictional universe would you most want to live in? And which one do you think would be worth an adventure visit?
SFR Brigade Badge As a blogger-member of the SFR Brigade, my mission, and I have decided to accept it (no apologies for trope mixing) is to promote science fiction romance in general, and today, the Midsummer Blog Hop in particular.
Sunday Post
If you ever have the chance to go to a live performance of Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion, go! It’s a load of fun. Yesterday was our second time, and it was just as much fun, although entirely different. The show was being broadcast as we were listening, so it was strange but neat hearing the NPR intro kind of while being inside it.
