Freedom to Read Giveaway Hop

freedom-to-read-giveaway-hop1-237x300

Welcome to the Freedom to Read Giveaway Hop, hosted by Bookhounds and I Am A Reader.

This hop celebrates our freedom, this weekend in the U.S. at least, to read as much as we want over the three-day Fourth of July Weekend.

I’d love to share that freedom with a lucky reader of this blog, so I am giving away either a $10 Amazon Gift Card or a book up to $10 in value from The Book Depository. So if you live anywhere that Book Depository ships, you have a chance to win.

Favorite Heroines Giveaway Hop

favorite heroines

The Favorite Heroines Giveaway Hop is organized by The Herd Hops and hosted by Herding Cats & Burning Soup.

What makes a heroine? There are all sorts of ways to be a heroine. There are warrior heroines and princess heroines (sometimes those two things are combined) but there are also plenty of other ways.

In fantasy there is always the option of the wizard/sorceress/enchantress heroine. You know, someone who can light lamps with the flick of her fingers – or set the entire world on fire.

Contemporary stories also provide different ways to be a heroine – women can save lives through medicine or crime-fighting (or fire-fighting). Or they can just be the heroine for their own families or neighborhoods.

fellowship of the ring by tolkien old paperbackWhen I first read The Lord of the Rings, I was in grade school. I remember being annoyed because there were no women on that epic quest. I wanted there to be someone I could identify with in that motley crew. At the time, I was particularly wishing for a female wizard, but I could be flexible about it.

It’s 40 years later, and I’m still pissed that there was no kick-ass warrior woman on that journey.

On the other hand, I think that Harry Potter (and Ron Weasley) would have died an ignominious death early in The Sorceror’s Stone without Hermione. And I know I’m not the only one who thinks that. (But why she ended up with Ron I’ll never understand.)

talon of the hawk by jeffe kennedyJeffe Kennedy’s recent Twelve Kingdoms series features three different types of heroines – the oldest sister is the warrior princess, the middle sister is the magic practitioner, and the youngest sister becomes a goddess avatar. But they are all active heroines with agency. They also do a kick-ass job of showcasing the power of sisterhood.

I play videogames, and the Dragon Age series also contains a terrific group of different types of active and action heroines as well as allowing the player to choose the sex, race and job classification of their player/character hero or heroine. There is a scene early in Dragon Age: Inquisition where Cassandra, the warrior woman and Leliana, the spymistress, turn over the reins of power in a very public ceremony. When the player is female, the scene of two powerful women handing over those reins of power to a third equally powerful woman gives me chills every single time. (If you are curious, the sequence of events is captured in this Youtube vid)

And now it’s time for you to tell everyone who your favorite heroine (of any kind) is. Answer the question in the rafflecopter for your chance at either a $10 Gift Card or a book of your choice ($10 or under) from The Book Depository.

Fool for Books Giveaway Hop

fool for love giveaway hop

It’s that time again! Happy April Fools’ Day and welcome to the Fool for Books Giveaway Hop, hosted by I Am a Reader, Not a Writer.

Most of us, and by us I mean readers of this and other book blogs, unfortunately not us as in the wider universe, are fools for books. We are voracious readers and are happy to lose hours if not days in the pages of a good book.

(It may be April Fools’ Day, but at least I wasn’t foolish enough to be using the “Royal We” or “Us” in the previous paragraph. I still have SOME sense!

I don’t know how many of you have had this experience, but my mother always used to ask why I needed more books. After all, I already had so many! It’s impossible to explain to someone who doesn’t read oodles of books why it is so important to have choices. The new ones always look so marvelous, and the keeper shelf is, well, the KEEPER shelf. That’s why those books are there, to be kept and loved again and again.

Never mind the concept of “auto-buy” authors. I might as well be speaking in tongues.

So what books are you a fool for? Or who is on your auto-buy list? And has it changed from last year?

Answer the question for a chance at either a $10 Amazon or B&N Gift Card or the book of your choice up to $10 in value. The books will be coming from The Book Depository for any international entrants, so you’ll need to be in a location that Book Depository ships to.

Lucky Leprechaun Giveaway Hop

Lucky-Leprechaun-Hop-2015

Welcome to the Lucky Leprechaun Giveaway Hop, hosted by I Am A Reader, Not A Writer and author Cindy Thomas!

If you catch the Leprechaun, you get a pot of gold. Or sometimes three wishes.

Since I’m not a Leprechaun (I’m not even Irish) I do not have a pot of gold for you at the end of the rainbow. But I can grant one bookish wish. The winner here at Reading Reality will receive the book of their choice from Amazon or The Book Depository. (Because I’m using the Book Depository, this is an international giveaway. As long as you live somewhere that Book Depository ships, you can enter) The only limit to the bookish wish is that it has to be available for the equivalent of under $10 US Dollars, no matter what currency it ends up being in. (I don’t have a pot of gold of my own, either!)

So answer the question in the Rafflecopter for your chance to win a book of your choice. Do you feel lucky?

Share the Love Giveaway Hop

share the love hop

Welcome to the second(?) annual(hopefully) Share the Love Giveaway Hop, hosted (and conceived by) Herding Cats & Burning Soup. We’re Sharing the Love this week and surprise bombing bloggers and authors we adore with a little love! Hop by all of the blogs for chances to win great prizes at each stop and find out which authors and bloggers we think are so darn special!

In honor of the upcoming Valentine’s Day (card & flower & chocolate fest) holiday, we are all sharing our love of some of our favorite book blogs, in the hopes that readers will find more books (and book bloggers) to love.

Since I’ve been catching up on my science fiction romance reading this month, and absolutely loving it, I’m going to share some of my favorite SFR blogs with you.

GalaxyExpressLogoSmaller1. The Galaxy Express: Heather Massey is the captain of this fantastic jaunt into the space lanes. She publishes any and all SFR news, as well as cover reviews, interviews with SFR authors and SFR giveaways. Her analysis of SFR and how it gets promoted is always fascinating, and her list of new SFR releases adds much too much to my TBR pile.

SFR station button2. The SFR Station is a new face on the SFR barroom floor, but it has something that will make readers stand up and cheer. If your love isn’t just for SFR, but for a particular stripe of the genre, SFR Station categories their reviews and features by series, author and most interesting, pairing type and sub-genre. So if you only want cyberpunk, or only want abduction, this is the place to find exactly what you’re looking for.

SFRQ website button3. Sci-Fi Romance Quarterly is more than a blog. The SFRQ is a quarterly online magazine of SFR reviews, features and original content. (Full disclosure, I am one of the reviewers). If you are interested in exploring the full range of what SFR has to offer, the Sci-Fi Romance Quarterly is a great place to start.

sgscifilogo_rev4. Smart Girls Love SciFi because, well, smart girls do! (They also love a bit of paranormal romance!) In addition to terrific reviews of both SFR and Paranormal Rom, the Smart Girls also get into general geekery about TV and movies, everything from The Jetsons (where’s my flying car?) to Guardians of the Galaxy.

BookPushersLogofinal300x2205. The Book Pushers: Last but not least. We do great reviews, especially our joint and group reviews, which are generally awesome. We push books. (And full disclosure, I’m also one of those book pushers)

Dreaming of Books Giveaway Hop

dreaming-of-books-2015

I’m dreaming of a white Christmas…no wait, that was last month.

This month (and honestly, every month) I’m dreaming of books. Hopefully you are too, since this is the Dreaming of Books Giveaway Hop hosted by I Am a Reader.

There are some books that we dream of, waiting anxiously for them to appear. And then there are other books that we dream about because they give us a “book hangover” and we can’t let go of them until they have worked their way completely through the psyche. Often with angst.

So let’s talk about books that have stuck in the brain because we’re book hungover. For me, it’s usually something in an ongoing series, usually in a world that really fascinates me, whether I’d want to live there or not. John Scalzi’s Old Man’s War series always leaves me with a book hangover. So did Jean Johnson’s Theirs Not to Reason Why series. And I’m still speculating about where Ann Leckie is going to go after Ancillary Sword.

What about you? What recent book has left you stranded in the author’s world? Or, what upcoming books are you dreaming of reading? Leave a comment in the rafflecopter for a chance at a $10 Amazon or B&N Gift Card.

Winter Warm Up Blog Hop

The Winter Warm-Up Blog Hop is organized by Hops with Heart.

This may sound mean, but I’ve already warmed up my winter. We moved from Seattle to Atlanta early this month, and it is 15 degrees warmer here.

Also, in our new home the bathrooms are the warmest rooms in the house, instead of the absolutely coldest places on earth, which describes our apartment in Seattle. Trust me on this, but the bathroom is not the place you want to freeze in the winter!

Freezing your buns off is never conducive to romance – especially in a room that never contains a cozy bed with lots of blankets.

One of my favorite ways of keeping warm in the winter is to have a nice, hot cup of cocoa while reading a great book while my feet (and sometimes the rest of me) are covered by a nice, toasty blanket. Or a cat.

What’s your favorite way of keeping warm when it’s cold outside? Fill out the rafflecopter for your chance at a $10 Amazon or B&N Gift Card.

There is also a grand prize of one $75 Amazon Gift Card. If you want the chance of warming up with lots of good books and hot cocoa from Amazon, here’s the rafflecopter.
