Sometimes books give me earworms. Sometimes it’s because of the book’s title. I’ve been having an earworm of Frank Sinatra’s version of the song “Luck Be a Lady” and wondering what that was about. So, naturally I looked it up.

Some of it is clearly inspired by the name of this hop. The rest, quite possibly as a result of reading Mastering the Art of French Murder last weekend as I was setting up the Sunday Post. “Luck Be a Lady”, although not Frank’s rendition, was one of the songs that came out of the then-popular hit musical, Guys and Dolls. In 1950. Exactly the year that Mastering the Art of French Murder is set.

So there was a reason. At least sorta/kinda. And we are lucky, at least here in Atlanta, to be experiencing spring – at least off and on – as March seems to be coming in this year like a rather wet lion. Your local mileage may definitely vary on that part.

Whether luck is a lady or not, March is the month where it seems like every event revolves around either luck or booze or a combination of the two. St. Patrick’s Day is in the middle of the month, so everything seems to have clovers plastered on it, or gets turned green like the Chicago River. Or both. Sometimes it’s both. March 17 is a day when everyone claims to be a bit Irish and entirely too many people try to paint the town not so much red as green.

And my brain just went to some seriously yucky places about how that green gets painted and let’s not go there any further.

This is the first of two giveaway hops this month with a “luck” theme. Someone is going to get lucky here at Reading Reality by winning the prize for this hop. The theme for this hop made me think of Luck Be a Lady, a song from the “Great American Songbook” that’s been covered over and over (and over) again since it was first performed by Robert Alda in the musical Guys and Dolls all the way back in 1950 – on Broadway. The version I’m hearing in my head is the one by Frank Sinatra, as it became one his signature songs, so I probably heard it, well, over and over again. You might have heard that version too, if you ever saw the movie Mrs. Doubtfire, as it’s the one that’s used in the film.

The classics never seem to die, they just get repurposed. That’s what makes them classic.

Whether luck is ever a lady is certainly open to question. She is when she’s running in your favor, and she isn’t when she’s in someone else’s. That’s Life, or so another classic song of the same era  – also popularized by Sinatra – goes.

But this is a giveaway hop, so luck might be a lady for you.
